THE GIANT SLEEPOVER – JUNE 18TH 2005
BLAKEDOWN PACK HOLIDAY JUNE 17TH TO JUNE 19TH 2005
No sleep Friday night and only dozing on Saturday night but that is the
penance you pay for being Cub Scout Leaders. The Giant Sleepover Event
was not till the Saturday night but we stayed over on the Friday night
as we were going on a trip early Saturday morning. Even after a hectic
game on the field and a late night hike were they tired, no they were
not, we confiscated the last torch at around 3.45. We were up at 6
because the coach was coming at 8.30 and three cubs were going home
(they did come back) because of prior commitments. To get 30 cubs plus
leaders washed and dressed with only 3 sinks is no mean feat and then to
make sure they have got a daypack, waterproof, drinks bottle and then
get the right lunch in the right bag is another thing – but we managed
it and the coach left at 8.40. We made good time and arrived at the
Tramway Village and paid our dues and collected an old 1p and ½ p for
every person on the trip. This got us our ticket on the tram ride and
allowed us to ride the tram as many times as we liked. There was a lot
to do, going into the workshops and watching the trams being
refurbished, the exhibition hall and the sculpture trail with its lovely
wood carvings. The view over the Derwent Valley was lovely. It was a
lovely time and there was no rush to get round to see everything. Once
back on the coach the majority fell asleep. Saturday evening after
dinner we played on the field with the water rocket and other related
water activities. After supper they took part in a camp fire and then
bed and sleep!!
Sunday morning we had to wake them up and then while they were packing
their kit breakfast was being sorted and a full English was eaten a la
fresco. The parents collected them at 11am and we were able to finish
the last bits of clearing up and go home to relax!
The Giant Sleepover is the same time next year and I am already looking
out for somewhere different for our trip.
