Blakedown Cub Scouts Sixers and Seconders Day Out
Saturday 9th February 2008
An invitation came from the Woodlands Trust to plant trees down in
Wales. What a fantastic idea we thought we will make a day of it and
take the Sixers and Seconders and also visit Goodrich Castle at the same
time.

We left Blakedown at just gone 09:00 hours and first stop was Goodrich
Castle. We parked in the car park and had a drink and a biscuit before
going to see the castle. On our way to the visitors centre we passed the
car park paying machine which Akela insisted was not there last time he
visited, so Chil made the walk back to the bus to put the ticket on. The
cubs loved being able to wander around the castle and go up and down the
really rickety stairs and walk round the castle in the moat.
We had to be in Usk by 13:00 hours so we went back to the visitors
centre and the shop. Back into the mini bus and we made our way to Usk
and on the way through we were hoping to find a fish and chip shop so
that they could have chips and something for lunch. The first time
through we could not find one but after turning around and going back
into Usk we asked a lady where one was. She told us and also said that
the chips were lovely but she did not know if it was opened. Luckily for
us it was. We were running a bit late so the cubs ate in the bus
arriving at the place we were planting trees still eating.
They were shown how to plant the trees and then they collected the tree
they were going to plant and the tube that protected it and the mat
which went round it and started planting. We had a two hour slot and on
the way back in the bus they reckoned they had planted 91 trees in
total.

Before we left we had another drink and some chocolate chip cookies and
biscuits which Raksha had made and set off for home. We decided to come
home via the Severn bridge.
After a loo stop on the motorway services, where we saw some upside down
cars, and a petrol stop at Hagley we arrived back at the hut at around
17:40 hours.
It was a really lovely day, the weather was warm and very spring like,
not at all like a day in February should be like. Everyone had a really
fantastic day.
